What is painted

A table stretches under the branches of a great oak in full fall color, its leaves turning rust and gold. Guests sit along both sides, passing dishes and leaning in to talk. Beyond the hill, the land drops toward a winding river, and on the far side a village gathers around a church steeple.

The painting is warm without being busy: copper, mustard and sage, with plenty of sky. Above the scene sits the verse, “In every thing give thanks”, and the reference 1 Thessalonians 5:18, so the words read as a grace said over the whole valley.

Thanks in everything, not for everything

Paul wrote this letter to a young church in Thessalonica, a city in Macedonia, not long after he had been forced to leave it. Near the end he gives a run of short commands: “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

The wording is careful. Paul does not ask anyone to be grateful for suffering itself. He says to give thanks in every thing, in the middle of whatever is happening. The Thessalonians were facing opposition and grieving members who had died, so this was not advice written for easy days.

That is what makes the verse fit a harvest table. A good meal with people you love is a moment when thanks comes easily, and the verse asks you to remember it when it does not.
