What is painted

The cross is two weathered wooden beams, planted at the edge of a hillside among rocks and low shrubs. A dirt path climbs past it and continues along the slope. Below and beyond, ridge after ridge of mountains fade into the distance, their valleys filled with drifting mist.

The sun sits low in a sky of soft gray and gold clouds and warms the whole scene. It is a wide, breathing landscape with the soft texture of oil on paper, and there is no text anywhere on it.

Crosses by the road

In many Christian regions, especially in the Alps and other mountain country, travelers have long set up crosses along paths and on summits, as a mark of thanksgiving, as a memorial for someone lost, or simply as a place to stop and pray. The painting belongs to that tradition: a cross not inside a church, but out where people walk.

Scripture ties the cross and the road together. Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Following him is described as a way to walk, not a place to stay. And the mountains recall the psalm that begins “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help” (Psalm 121:1).

Sunrise is a deliberate choice as well. The women came to the tomb very early in the morning, at the rising of the sun (Mark 16:2), so dawn light over a cross has always spoken of Easter.
