Footprints in the Sand, Deuteronomy 31:8
Two sets of footprints wander side by side along an empty shoreline toward the setting sun, painted beneath Moses' last words of courage to Joshua.
The shoreline
There are no people in this painting, only their traces. Two parallel lines of bare footprints start large in the foreground and shrink as they curve up the beach into the distance. To the left, low waves roll in with white foam; to the right, a soft dune is tufted with tall green beach grass. A headland fades into blue haze, and the sun sits just above the water, laying a path of gold across the sea.
The colors are warm sand, peach and slate blue. The verse is written above in dark brown script: “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee”.
Who is speaking in Deuteronomy 31:8?
Moses is, near the end of his life. The chapter opens with him announcing that he is a hundred and twenty years old and will not cross the Jordan into the promised land. Joshua will lead the people instead. In front of all Israel, Moses turns to his successor and says these words.
In the King James Bible the full verse reads: “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” It is spoken to someone about to take on a responsibility he did not ask for, in a place he has never been. God will be there first.
The promise traveled far. The letter to the Hebrews picks it up centuries later, reminding Christians that God has said he will never leave them nor forsake them.
Why footprints?
The image recalls the much-loved Footprints poem, in which a walker looks back over the beach of his life and wonders why there is only one set of prints at the hardest moments. Several people have claimed its authorship over the years, but its idea is close to this verse: the Lord walks ahead and alongside.
