What is painted

The arch dominates the page, a great curve of cracked limestone in honey, ochre and cool gray, with tufts of green shrubs growing along its top and down its sides. Through the opening you see a sunlit valley with a river and fields, and beyond it tall mountain peaks under a soft blue sky with white clouds.

On the left pillar, in a small cave-like hollow in the stone, a white dove sits on a nest of twigs, sheltered and calm. It is easy to miss at first. The watercolor is loose and luminous, with splashes and speckles of paint at the edges that fade into the white paper. There is no text on the print.

“In the clefts of the rock”

The Bible knows the dove as a bird of rocky places. In the Song of Solomon, the beloved is called “O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs” (Song of Solomon 2:14), and the prophet Jeremiah speaks of the dove that makes her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth (Jeremiah 48:28). The painting shows exactly that: a dove at rest in the shelter of the stone.

The rock itself is one of the Bible's most frequent names for God. “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer,” says David (Psalm 18:2). When Moses asked to see God's glory, he was placed in a cleft of the rock and covered while the glory passed by (Exodus 33:22). And in Psalm 55:6 the psalmist sighs, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.”

Put together, the picture says something simple: the small and fragile can rest safely inside something much stronger than itself.
