What is painted

A sandy footpath climbs gently along the edge of a wooded slope. Great leafy trees lean over it from the left, their foliage lit gold and green by the low sun. Far down the path, two small figures walk side by side toward the open country, where a river winds through a broad valley past a village and on to blue hills.

The sky is a warm wash of peach, cream and pale blue, the sun just touching the horizon. In that open space, in a graceful brown script, the words: “All the trees of the field shall clap their hands”, with Isaiah 55:12 beneath. The painting has a soft, glowing finish and brushed edges that fade into the paper.

A song of homecoming

Isaiah 55 opens with an invitation, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters”, and it is addressed to people who have lived far from home. God promises that his word will not return to him void but will accomplish what he pleases, and verse 12 describes what that looks like: “For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing.”

Then the trees join in. It is poetry, of course, but it says something serious: when God restores his people, the whole of creation takes part in the celebration. The next verse continues the picture, with fir trees growing where there were thorns and myrtle instead of briars.

The two travelers in the painting are going out, as the verse says, and the trees above them are doing exactly what Isaiah promised.
