About this print

Jesus Calms the Storm

Dark clouds still roll over the water, but the light has already broken through, and every eye in the boat is turned toward one man.

What is painted

A weathered fishing boat rides high on a swell of green and white water. Jesus stands near the bow in a cream robe, his outer mantle whipped back by the wind, one arm stretched out over the sea. Three disciples sit low in the hull, gripping the gunwale and the ropes, their faces lifted toward him with a mix of fear and wonder.

Above them the sky is split in two. On the left, heavy storm clouds in slate and umber; on the right, a burst of gold where rays of sun pour down onto the waves. The brushwork is thick and energetic, in the manner of an impressionist oil painting, and nowhere on the picture is there any lettering.

Peace on the lake

Mark 4:35-41 tells the story. At evening Jesus tells his disciples to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. A great windstorm rises and the waves beat into the boat until it begins to fill, yet Jesus is asleep on a cushion in the stern. The frightened men wake him: “Master, carest thou not that we perish?”

He gets up, rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace, be still.” The wind stops and there is a great calm. Then he asks them why they are so fearful and where their faith is. Still shaken, they say to one another, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Matthew 8 and Luke 8 record the same crossing, which made it one of the most beloved miracles for anyone going through a season of anxiety, illness or loss.

Where it belongs

Because the painting holds both the storm and the light, it speaks to people in the middle of something hard: a friend facing surgery, a family after a move, a student far from home. Hang it in an entryway, above a desk, or in a counseling or prayer room at church. Fishermen, sailors and anyone who lives near the water tend to love a sea scene with this kind of movement.

The poster is a giclée print on heavy archival matte paper, made to order in the United States, with free shipping to any US address. It is sold without a frame, and the painted surface fills the whole sheet, right out to each edge. Choose a size between 5x7 and 24x36 inches, a metric or A size, or a digital file if you prefer to print at home.

Paired with other Gospel scenes, it makes a quiet gallery wall about trust. On its own in a large size, it gives a living room a strong focal point without a single word on the wall.
