I Am the Light of the World, John 8:12 Wall Art

Jesus is shown to just below the waist, standing and facing us. His long brown hair falls in waves over his shoulders, and his eyes are gently closed. He wears a cream tunic with a slate-blue mantle and a terracotta shawl crossed over it, the edges dissolving into drips of pigment at the bottom of the sheet.

In his cupped hands sits a small brown clay lamp of the kind used in first-century homes, with a single flame rising from its spout. The light is painted as a warm yellow glow that spreads across his chest and fingers, the brightest point in the whole composition. Above, lettered in brown: “I am the light of the world”, and under it John 8:12.

What was Jesus saying in John 8:12?

The words are spoken in the Temple in Jerusalem, near the treasury, during or just after the Feast of Tabernacles. That autumn festival remembered Israel's years in the wilderness, when God led the people by a pillar of fire at night. Ancient Jewish sources describe huge golden lamps lit in the Temple courts during the feast, so bright that they lit up the city. Against that backdrop Jesus makes a startling claim.

The complete verse reads: “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” It is one of seven sayings in John where Jesus begins with “I am”, alongside the bread of life, the good shepherd and the true vine. Each takes an everyday image and makes it personal.

The painter's choice of a humble oil lamp rather than a blaze of glory is worth noticing. The light here is small enough to hold, the kind that shows the next step on a dark path. In the following chapter Jesus heals a man born blind, turning the saying into something that actually happens.

This is a thoughtful present for a pastor, priest or minister, for an ordination or a church anniversary, and it hangs well in a study, a vestry or a fellowship hall. Its restraint suits both traditional and contemporary spaces.

At home, a hallway, a reading nook or a bedroom that tends to be dim in winter are good places for it. It is also given at baptisms, where many churches hand a lit candle to the newly baptized with a reminder to walk as children of light.
