What is painted

A huge natural arch of red and ochre rock frames the whole picture. Beneath it, on a flat boulder, a lion lies with its head up, calm and watchful, mane glowing in the warm light. Through the opening, a dry valley runs off toward a line of blue mountains under a wide sky.

There is no lettering on this print. The watercolor plays sandstone oranges against cool distant blues, and the stillness of the lion gives the landscape its weight.

Why a lion?

The lion is one of the Bible's great images of strength. Proverbs 28:1 says that “the righteous are bold as a lion.” Jacob blesses his son Judah as a lion's whelp (Genesis 49:9), and in Revelation 5:5 Christ himself is called “the Lion of the tribe of Juda,” the one who has prevailed.

What makes this painting different is that the lion is not roaring or hunting. It is resting. Strength that no longer needs to prove itself is closer to what scripture praises: courage held with calm, power that waits. The arch overhead adds shelter, a strong place in a wide wilderness.
