What is painted

The composition is built from a few broad shapes. On the left rises a great mesa of terracotta rock, and on its flat top a lion stands in profile, small against the space, golden with a darker mane. Below and behind, hills roll away in bands of sage green, sand and slate blue, and a round ochre sun hangs in the upper right of a cream sky.

The watercolor is laid down in soft washes with a little grain, in the modern minimal style that suits contemporary interiors. There is no lettering. The lion is not roaring; it simply stands there, and the stillness gives it authority.

The lion in Scripture

Even without a verse, the lion carries a lot of biblical meaning. When Jacob blesses his sons at the end of Genesis, he calls Judah “a lion's whelp” (Genesis 49:9), and from the tribe of Judah came David and, according to the Gospels, Jesus. In Revelation, one of the elders tells John not to weep, for “the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed” (Revelation 5:5). Then John turns and sees a Lamb.

The lion is also a picture of courage for the believer. Proverbs says “the righteous are bold as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1). And the rock beneath him recalls the many psalms that call God a rock, as in “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer” (Psalm 18:2).

So the image can be read two ways at once: Christ the Lion of Judah, or a faithful person standing steady on the rock that does not move.
