What is painted

Rendered in the look of a linocut, the picture is built almost entirely from black ink on cream paper, with a single warm amber reserved for the lit windows. The two builders at the end of the Sermon on the Mount

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with this parable. The full verse begins “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man.” The next verse sends the rain, the floods and the winds against that house, and it falls not, because it was founded upon a rock.

Then comes the other builder, who hears the same words and does not do them, and builds on sand. The same storm hits his house, “and great was the fall of it.” Both men hear; both face the weather. The difference is whether the teaching is lived. Luke tells the parable too, and adds that the wise builder digged deep before he laid the foundation (Luke 6:48).

Matthew notes that when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine, because he taught as one having authority.
