About this print
Chapel on the Hill, Psalm 27:4
A path climbing between olive trees to a little stone church at the top of a hill, and David's one request, set above it like a promise you could walk toward.
What is painted
The chapel is small and plain: honey-colored stone, a red tiled roof and a little bell tower, with a single cypress beside it. It sits near the top of a green hill. Olive trees stand on the slopes, and a pale footpath edged with wildflowers climbs toward it from the foreground. Beyond, a wide valley with a winding river fades into blue mountains, and the sun is low in a sky of soft clouds.
It is a landscape first, painted with the softness of oil on paper and framed by generous empty margins. The verse is lettered beneath in elegant script: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after”, with Psalm 27:4 underneath.
The one thing David asked for
Psalm 27 is headed “A Psalm of David” and it opens with confidence: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” The verses that follow mention enemies, armies and war, real dangers pressing in. And yet in the middle of it, the psalmist narrows everything down to a single desire.
Verse 4 in full: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.” He does not ask first for victory or safety. He asks to live near God, to look at his beauty and to keep asking him questions.
In David's time the house of the LORD meant the tabernacle and later the temple in Jerusalem. The painting translates it into something any reader knows: a small house of prayer on a hill, with a path that leads right up to it. For many Christians the verse has become a prayer for a lifetime of worship, and for a home where God is sought.
