What is painted

Why an almond tree?

In the land of the Bible, the almond is the first tree to bloom, flowering in late winter while other trees are still bare. Its Hebrew name is related to a word for watching or waking, and God plays on it when he shows the young Jeremiah an almond rod and says, “I will hasten my word to perform it” (Jeremiah 1:11-12). Aaron's rod, laid up before the LORD, budded overnight and yielded almonds (Numbers 17:8).

The painting pairs that early blossom with a verse about steadiness. Psalm 46:5 describes the city of God, the place where the Most High dwells: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” The mountains of the same psalm may shake, but the city holds, because of who lives in her.

Many women read the verse as a word addressed to them, and the painting invites that reading. A woman walks on through a changing season, and she is not alone on the path.
