What is painted

Psalm 46 is a song of confidence in disaster. It opens with “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” and goes on to imagine the worst: the earth removed, mountains carried into the sea, waters roaring. Against all that, verse 5 speaks of a place that stays put because God lives in it.

The word “moved” comes back in the very next verse, where “the heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved.” Kingdoms may be moved; the one God dwells in will not be. The line ends, in the full verse, with the promise that God will help “right early”, that is, as the day breaks.

This psalm is the one that inspired Martin Luther's hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, and it has been a source of strength for Christians in times of war and upheaval. In modern devotion the verse is widely used as a word for women, and the still life, with its flowers and open Bible, suits that reading.
