What is painted

She sits sideways on the top of a garden wall, one knee drawn up, an open book in her lap. Climbing roses in pink and cream spill over the stones beside her and arch overhead. Below the wall the ground falls away into a wide valley filled with morning haze, the far hills only a pale outline.

The verse runs across the top: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved”, with Psalm 46:5 beneath. Blush, sage and warm stone tones give the watercolor a quiet, feminine calm without being sugary.

Who is “her” in this verse?

In its setting, the verse speaks of a city. Verse 4 describes “a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.” Verse 5 continues: God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved, and “God shall help her, and that right early.” The city stands firm because God lives inside it.

Many women today read the line as a personal promise, and that reading follows the logic of the psalm: what is true of the dwelling place of God is true of any heart where he lives. The strength is not in the woman herself, or in the walls, but in who is at the center.

“Right early” is worth noticing too. The Hebrew speaks of the turning of the morning. Help comes with the dawn, which matches the misty light in the painting.
