Who is “her” in Psalm 46?

Psalm 46 is the psalm that begins “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” and contains the famous line “Be still, and know that I am God” (verse 10). It imagines the earth shaking and the mountains carried into the sea, and it answers that fear with the presence of God.

In its original setting, “her” is the city of God. Verse 4 speaks of a river whose streams make glad the city of God, and verse 5 continues: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” The city stands not because its walls are thick but because God lives within it.

Many women have taken the verse personally, as a word spoken over their own life: steady, not shaken, with God at the center. The painting leans into that reading by putting a woman on the path, but the older meaning is worth knowing, since it makes the promise bigger, not smaller.
