Who is “her” in Psalm 46?

Psalm 46 is headed “for the sons of Korah”, a family of Temple singers. It begins with the world falling apart, the earth removed and the mountains carried into the midst of the sea, and it answers with calm: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Verse 4 turns to a river whose streams make glad the city of God, and verse 5 continues with that city: “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” In its first meaning, “her” is Jerusalem, the city where God dwells. “Right early” is literally at the turning of the morning, the moment help arrives after the night.
