What is painted

Not moved, even when the mountains are

The phrase “she shall not be moved” is striking once you read the verses before it. Psalm 46 opens with an earthquake: the earth removed, the mountains carried into the sea, the waters roaring and troubled. Everything that looks solid moves. And in the middle of that, God's city does not.

This psalm inspired Martin Luther's hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, and it also contains the well-known line “Be still, and know that I am God” in verse 10. The two ideas belong together. The stillness of the one who trusts is not rigidity, but the calm of someone who knows who stands with her.

The painting shows exactly that contrast: a moving world of wind, water and swirling earth, and a woman standing firm at its center.
