What is painted

The harvest psalm

Psalm 65 is a psalm of David, and its last verses read like a walk through the countryside after a good season. God visits the earth and waters it, the river of God is full of water, the ridges are soaked and the furrows settled. Verse 11 is the high point: the whole year is crowned with goodness, “and thy paths drop fatness”, meaning abundance falls wherever God goes.

Then comes a picture of joy: the pastures are clothed with flocks, “the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing” (verse 13). In the King James Bible “corn” means grain in general, like the wheat in this painting.

The image of a crown is worth pausing on. A crown comes at the end, when the work is done. Harvest is the moment you see a year's worth of rain, sun and labor gathered in, and the psalm gives the credit upward.
