An evening at the door

The house is built of rough pale stones, with a timber pergola along the roof and an olive branch trailing over the corner. Its doorway glows amber behind a half-drawn curtain. In front of it a family has gathered on the ground: a woman in a white head covering and red shawl, a boy leaning against her, and a bearded man in a cream robe and blue mantle who turns toward them with an easy smile. A small fire burns in a ring of stones at their feet.

A lamb sleeps beside a woven basket on the left, and tall clay jars stand at either end. Over the wall, a hill town with lit windows and dark cypresses rises against a deep blue night, and a single bright star of the kind that recalls Bethlehem shines above it. Many will see the Holy Family here; the painting leaves that to the viewer. The words above read: “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.”

The only psalm credited to Moses

Psalm 90 opens the fourth book of the Psalter with an unusual heading: “A Prayer of Moses the man of God.” Tradition therefore makes it one of the most ancient texts in the collection, and its voice suits a man who led a people for forty years with no fixed address. For a generation living in tents in the wilderness, the claim is striking. Their home was not a place but a Person.

The next verse widens the view: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Against that eternity, the psalm goes on to describe human life as brief as grass that springs up in the morning and fades by evening. It is honest about mortality, which is why it is read at so many funerals.

Yet the first line is the one people carry away. “In all generations” reaches back to grandparents and forward to children not yet born. Whatever houses a family lives in over the years, the psalmist says, the real shelter stays the same.

A home blessing that will outlast the move

Psalm 90:1 is a natural verse for a housewarming, a first home after a wedding, or a family that has just relocated across the country. It says the walls matter less than who lives within them and whom they trust.

Hang it in an entry, over a fireplace or along the staircase where family photos already gather. Its warm browns and night blue look at home with wood, stone and brick, and grandparents often give it to mark a new branch of the family tree.
