What is painted

An open Bible lies at the front, its pages fanned, a ribbon marker hanging from the binding. Behind it, laid diagonally, rests a short sword in a brown leather scabbard with a bronze hilt and a cross stamped on the sheath. The blade is never drawn. To the left, a small clay oil lamp holds a single flame, and sprays of olive leaves fan out behind the book.

“Which is the word of God”

The image comes from Paul's description of the armor of God in Ephesians 6. After the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation, he names the last piece: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). That is why the sword rests against the open book: the two are one and the same.

It is the only weapon in the list meant for more than defense, and Jesus used it that way in the wilderness, answering each temptation with “It is written” (Matthew 4). Hebrews takes up the image too, calling the word of God “sharper than any twoedged sword” (Hebrews 4:12).

The little lamp adds a second verse: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). The painting keeps the sword sheathed, which suits what Paul meant. The fight he describes is spiritual, and the believer's strength comes from Scripture read and remembered.
