Who is in the picture

What does 1 John 4:19 mean?
The First Letter of John is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, writing late in life to churches he calls “little children.” Chapter 4 is the Bible's most sustained reflection on love. It is here that John writes, twice, that God is love (verses 8 and 16), and a few lines earlier he makes the key point: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us.”
Verse 19 sums it up. Love for God is not an achievement we offer first; it is a response. A child does not earn a parent's love before being loved, and the picture makes that visible: the children are already welcome before they have said a word.
A small detail for Bible readers: the King James Version says “We love him,” while many modern translations, following older Greek manuscripts, simply read “We love because he first loved us.” Either way the order is the same, and it is the heart of the verse.
