A river, a sky and one bird

The dove fills the upper half of the scene, wings spread in a broad V, tail fanned, feet tucked under as if it is about to land. Its feathers are left mostly as bare paper with soft gray shadows, so it reads as the brightest thing on the sheet. Behind it the clouds open in blue-gray washes, and pale yellow rays fall from the gap.

Below, a calm river runs toward low blue hills, catching the light in streaks. Reeds and cattails grow from rounded boulders on both banks, and a few olive-green trees stand along the far shore. The lettering sits above in warm brown: “The Spirit of God descending like a dove”, then Matthew 3:16.

Why a dove at the Jordan?

Matthew tells the scene in one long sentence: “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.” Notice the wording. The Spirit is not said to be a bird; it comes down in the manner of one, gently, and settles. Luke adds that it came “in a bodily shape”, which is why painters have always felt free to draw it.

Readers of the Old Testament would have heard an echo. At the very start of Genesis the Spirit of God moves over the waters, and after the flood Noah sends out a dove that returns with an olive leaf. Water, Spirit and a dove together signal a new beginning, and the early Church saw baptism in exactly those terms.

That is also why this is one of the few moments in the Gospels where Father, Son and Spirit are all present at once: Jesus coming up from the river, the Spirit descending, and a voice from heaven in the next verse. Churches that follow a lectionary hear Matthew 3:13-17 on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, called Theophany in the Orthodox calendar.

Gifts for baptism and Confirmation

Because the image has no people in it, the print works for an infant baptism and an adult one alike, and it fits Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox homes. The dove is also the traditional sign of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation, so sponsors often give it to a teenager on that day.

The palette of cream, sky blue and sage is quiet enough for a nursery wall or a bedroom, and it sits well in a church office or classroom where Scripture art is used to teach.
