What is painted

A long table of dark wood fills the picture, set in a room of rough stone walls. The meal is over. There is bread, already broken, cups left where they were set down, and olive leaves scattered along the boards. No one is in the room, and the light is soft and low, as if a lamp is burning somewhere just out of view.

The painting has the depth and warmth of an oil still life, in browns and beige with the pale bread and the gray-green leaves standing out. There is no text on it, which leaves the silence of the room intact.

The table on the night he was betrayed

Paul, writing to the Corinthians, gives one of the earliest accounts of that meal. Jesus took bread and broke it, and “after the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped” (1 Corinthians 11:25). The phrase “after supper” is still spoken in many Eucharistic prayers today, and it is what this painting imagines: the moment just after.

Mark tells what happened next. “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.” That is why the olive leaves are on the table. The garden of Gethsemane lay on that hill, and its name is usually explained as meaning oil press. Within hours Jesus would pray there in agony, and be arrested.

An empty table is a way of painting the Last Supper without painting the people. The bread and cup stay behind, as they have stayed in the Church ever since.
