What is painted

Thirteen men sit on wooden benches around a long, horseshoe-shaped table in a room with thick whitewashed walls and rounded arches. Jesus is at the center of the curve, in a pale robe, with a round loaf of bread and a white cloth in front of him. The apostles sit on either side in robes of brown, rust, olive and slate, talking, listening, holding clay cups.

A patterned rug fills the open floor inside the horseshoe. On the right, a grapevine trails over a window that looks out on cypresses and a hill village; on the left, a clay pot of greenery sits in a wall niche. The style is soft and painterly, in warm ivory, sand and earth tones, with ragged edges that melt into the white paper. There is no lettering on this print.

The night of the Last Supper

All four Gospels tell of the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest. Luke says it was held in “a large upper room furnished”, prepared by Peter and John for the Passover. There Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying that it was his body, given for them. After supper he took the cup and called it the new testament in his blood.

The same night he told them that one of those at the table would betray him, and each asked in turn whether it was he. John's Gospel adds that Jesus washed their feet, and it records his long farewell words, including “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” The vine at the window is a small nod to that saying.

Most famous paintings line everyone up on one side of a straight table. This table bends into a half circle instead, which is closer to the feeling of a family meal: faces turned toward each other, no one quite in front of anyone else.
