What is painted

In the foreground a woman in a dusty rose dress and a beige head covering has sunk to her knees on the paving stones. Her arm is stretched out, and her fingers have just closed on the fringe of his robe. The light is warm and bright, painted in soft oil-like strokes that fray out into the white paper. The woman who touched his clothes

The story is told in Mark 5, Matthew 9 and Luke 8. A woman has suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years. Mark adds that she had suffered many things of many physicians and spent all that she had, and was nothing better but rather grew worse. Under the law of Moses her condition also made her ritually unclean, cut off from ordinary contact.

She comes up behind Jesus in the crowd, thinking, “If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.” Matthew and Luke specify the border or hem of his garment. The flow stops at once. Jesus turns and asks who touched him; his disciples point out that the whole crowd is thronging him. Trembling, she comes forward and tells him everything.

His reply is gentle: “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.” He calls her daughter, and he makes her healing public so that everyone knows she is restored. The whole episode happens while he is on his way to the house of Jairus, whose daughter is dying.
