What is painted

The water is glassy and pale, catching the first pink and gold of morning. Jesus moves over it on foot, robe and mantle stirring slightly, heading for a little fishing boat with its sail half raised. On the far bank, low houses and a few trees sit in the haze.

There are no words on this print. The painting carries the story alone, in soft layered washes of rose, blue and cream, and the stillness of the lake makes the moment feel like the calm after a long night.

The story in the Gospels

Matthew, Mark and John all tell it. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat and goes up a mountain alone to pray. The wind turns against them and they row for hours. In the fourth watch of the night, the hours before dawn, he comes to them walking on the sea.

They are terrified and think he is a spirit. He answers, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27). Only Matthew adds that Peter asks to come to him on the water, steps out, sees the wind, begins to sink and is caught by the hand. When Jesus climbs into the boat the wind ceases, and those in the boat worship him.

This painting chooses the sunrise and the calm water rather than the storm, as if showing the last stretch of the walk, when the danger has passed and the boat is almost reached.
