Linen and Sandal Christian Wall Art

What is painted

Against a wall of large pale stones, a heavy cream cloth with a knotted fringe has been laid across a stone bench and falls in soft folds almost to the ground. On the paving below lies a single leather sandal with crossed straps, worn and a little dusty.

Beside the bench a slender daisy grows out of a crack in the steps. To the right, past the wall, you glimpse an olive branch, cypresses and blue hills. The light is warm and bright, in cream, honey and brown, laid down with thick, textured strokes that break apart into white at the edges. Nothing is written on the image.

Reading a still life

The painting names nothing, and that is its strength. For many viewers the folded linen on stone recalls Easter morning, when Peter and the other disciple ran into the tomb and saw the linen clothes lying, and the napkin that was about his head wrapped together in a place by itself (John 20:6-7). Whoever had lain there was no longer there.

The sandal speaks of walking. In the Gospels the disciples are sent out with sandals on their feet (Mark 6:9), and John the Baptist says he is not worthy to unloose the latchet of the shoes of the one coming after him. A sandal left behind can mean a journey finished, or simply someone who has stepped away for a moment.

The little flower growing out of the stone is the one living thing in the picture. It is small, but it catches the light.
