What is painted

On the left stands the angel Gabriel, tall and fair-haired, with great cream wings folded behind him and a golden mantle over a white robe. He holds a white lily in one hand and extends the other toward Mary, palm open, as if he has just spoken.

Mary sits on a small wooden stool on the right, wrapped in a slate blue veil and mantle over a cream dress. She looks up at him, one hand raised in surprise and the other pressed to her heart. The Annunciation in Luke 1

Luke says the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. This was in the sixth month after Elizabeth, Mary's cousin, had conceived John the Baptist.

Gabriel's greeting in verse 28 troubles her, and she wonders what manner of salutation this should be. He tells her not to fear: she will conceive and bear a son and call his name Jesus, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever. Mary asks how this can be, and hears that with God nothing shall be impossible. Her answer in verse 38 is one of the great acts of faith in the Bible: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”

The Hail Mary begins with Gabriel's words, joined to Elizabeth's greeting, blessed art thou among women. The Church celebrates the Annunciation on March 25, nine months before Christmas. The lily in Gabriel's hand is a traditional sign of Mary's purity in Christian art.
