What is painted

Jesus sits on a flat outcrop of stone near the edge of a hill, seen from behind and slightly to the side, in a cream robe with a tan mantle over his shoulders. His head is bowed and his hands are together in his lap. Around him are dry grasses, rough boulders and a bare tree on the left. Below, a long valley with a few dark cypresses and pale fields stretches away to a line of low hills, where the sun is just breaking the horizon under streaks of amber cloud.

The morning after a long day in Capernaum

The full verse begins: “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day”. Mark sets it right after one of the busiest days in his Gospel. In Capernaum, Jesus had taught in the synagogue, cast out an unclean spirit and healed Simon's mother-in-law of a fever. At sunset, Mark says, all the city was gathered together at the door, and he healed many who were sick.

The next morning, long before dawn, he slipped away to pray alone. Simon and the others went looking for him, and when they found him they said, “All men seek for thee” (Mark 1:37). His answer was to move on to the next towns and preach there as well, “for therefore came I forth.”

The verse says a great deal about Jesus in very few words. Even at the height of his popularity, with a whole town at the door, he made room to be alone with his Father. The Gospels come back to this again and again: Luke notes that he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed (Luke 5:16).
