What is painted

A tomb has been cut into a rocky hillside, and the great round stone that sealed it now sits rolled to one side. Mary Magdalene stands before the dark opening in a flowing mantle, one hand near her heart, looking in. Olive trees frame the garden, their leaves silver in the early sun.

The first witness

All four Gospels name Mary Magdalene at the tomb on the first day of the week. John tells it most closely. She comes while it is still dark and sees the stone taken away. She runs to tell Peter and the other disciple, then returns and stands outside the sepulchre weeping.

A man she takes for the gardener asks why she is crying. She begs him to tell her where the body has been laid. He says one word, “Mary”, and she turns and answers “Rabboni”, which means Master. Jesus sends her to his brothers, and she goes to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord” (John 20:18).

Because she carried that message first, Christian writers came to call her the apostle to the apostles. In the Catholic calendar her feast is kept on July 22.
