What is painted

We see Jesus mostly from behind, standing on rocks at the water's edge in a cream robe with an ochre striped mantle over one shoulder. His right arm is stretched out toward a wooden boat a few yards off, its sail furled against the mast. One fisherman stands knee-deep in the lake hauling on the net, the other sits in the boat with his hands full of mesh. The sun hangs low over the far hills and lays a band of gold across the water.

The painting is in soft, warm oil-like tones that fade into ragged edges on cream paper, and it catches the moment just before the answer. Below, in a flowing brown script, the words “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”, with Matthew 4:19 beneath.

The first disciples on the Sea of Galilee

Matthew tells it in a few lines. Walking by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus sees two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, “for they were fishers.” He calls them, and verse 20 says they straightway left their nets and followed him. A little further along he calls two more brothers, James and John, who are in a ship with their father Zebedee mending their nets.

The invitation is built on their own trade. Jesus does not ask them to become something foreign to them; he takes what they know, patience, hard work, going out in the dark and hauling in, and turns it toward people. Mark tells the same scene in his first chapter.

For many readers the striking word is “straightway.” There is no negotiation in the text, no list of conditions. Peter would later fail, deny and be restored, but it began here, on a working day, with a net still wet in his hands.
