What is painted

Rolling hills stretch to the horizon in broad bands of color: terracotta and rust in front, then sage, olive and sand, and a low line of blue mountains at the back. The sky is a soft wash of peach and pale blue, with long streaks of cloud.

In the lower right corner a small spring of dark blue water lies in a hollow between the rocks, and an olive branch with slender gray-green leaves reaches over it from the edge of the frame. Far away on the left, on the crest of a hill, stands a tiny dark cross, easy to miss at first. There is no text, only color and space.

Water, olive and cross

The painting gathers three quiet symbols. Water in a dry land runs all through Scripture: Isaiah 35 promises that in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Jesus tells the woman at the well that the water he gives shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:14).

The olive, from the dove's leaf in Genesis 8 to the Mount of Olives, speaks of peace and of long, patient life; olive trees can live for centuries in poor, stony soil. Psalm 52:8 says, “I am like a green olive tree in the house of God.”

And the cross on the ridge is set far off, as it would have been seen outside the walls of Jerusalem. The landscape does not force it on you. It is simply there, on the horizon of everything else.
