What is painted

The landscape is almost entirely desert: hill after hill in soft folds of sand and ochre, rising and falling toward the horizon. Through them runs a narrow trail, winding back and forth, and at its far end, on the top of a distant ridge, stands a small wooden cross. There are no people and no buildings, only the path and where it leads.

It is painted in watercolor washes of beige, brown and pale gold, letting the paper show through as light on the dunes. There is no text on this print; the empty land and the long road say enough.

A road through the wilderness

The desert is where much of the Bible's journeying happens. Israel wandered forty years in the wilderness before reaching the promised land, and Jesus spent forty days fasting in the wilderness before beginning his ministry. The forty days of Lent are modeled on those forty days.

Jesus also spoke of the path that leads to life as narrow, and said few find it (Matthew 7:14). The trail in this painting is narrow and winding, and it does not take the easy way across the hills. What makes it bearable is that you can see where it ends.

The Letter to the Hebrews says the faithful of old confessed that they were “strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13). A pilgrim is not lost; a pilgrim is on the way somewhere.
