What is painted

The Book of Proverbs opens with the words of Solomon, son of David, and chapter 3 is written as a father speaking to his child: “My son, forget not my law.” Verses 5 and 6 are the heart of it: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

“All thine heart” leaves nothing out. In Hebrew thought the heart was not only feeling but mind and will, the place where decisions are made. To trust with all of it is to bring plans, fears and reasoning to God, not just emotions.

The next line explains the contrast: leaning on our own understanding is like putting all our weight on a stick that cannot hold it. The chapel in the courtyard makes the same point quietly, a door always there to walk through.
