Path Through the Hills, Proverbs 3:5

What is painted

The hills are simplified into soft, curving layers: terracotta clay in the foreground, then sage green, sand, and blue ridges at the top. Each band has the gentle graininess of watercolor laid flat. A cream-colored trail starts wide at the bottom and snakes upward through the layers, and on a green ridge at the left a tiny dark cross stands where the path leads.

The verse sits above in flowing script: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart”, with Proverbs 3:5. The design is minimal and modern, much closer to a boho or neutral interior than to classic church art.

Trusting when you cannot see the whole road

The line is from the opening chapters of Proverbs, where a father addresses his son with advice for life. The full verse continues: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” The next verse finishes the thought: “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6).

“With all thine heart” is total. In Hebrew thought the heart is the seat of thinking and deciding, not only feeling, so this is a call to trust God with your plans and choices, not just your emotions. And “lean not” is an image of putting your weight on something. Your own understanding is real, but it cannot carry you.

The painting gives the verse a shape. You only see part of the path at a time as it bends between the hills, yet it does lead somewhere, and the cross stands where it goes.
