Who is the Proverbs 31 woman?

The last chapter of Proverbs opens with words that King Lemuel's mother taught him, and it ends with a poem of twenty-two verses, each beginning with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The poem starts with a question: “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” The Hebrew phrase behind “virtuous” is closer to “woman of valor”, the same word used for mighty warriors.

What follows is surprisingly practical. She buys a field, plants a vineyard, trades in fine linen, rises before dawn, cares for the poor and speaks with wisdom. Verse 25 shifts from her work to her character. Her real garments are strength and dignity, and the second half of the verse adds that she shall rejoice in time to come: she can look at the future and laugh, because she is ready for it.

In many Jewish homes the poem, known as Eshet Chayil, is sung on Friday evening before the Sabbath meal as a tribute to the woman of the house. Christians have long read it as a picture of wisdom lived out, open to every woman rather than a checklist no one could meet.

A gift for her

Choose it for a bride on her wedding day, a mother or grandmother on her birthday, or a friend starting a business or finishing a degree. It honors quiet courage more than appearance, which is exactly what the verse praises.

The earthy palette looks good in a bedroom, a home office or a kitchen with natural wood. A simple oak or walnut frame suits the rustic scene.
