What is painted

A steep outcrop of rock climbs from the bottom of the picture, all ridges and hard edges, and at its summit sits a small fortress of stone with walls and a tower. Behind it hangs a large ochre sun. The whole image is made in the manner of a linocut, with dense black areas, carved-looking lines and only one extra color, so it reads clearly from across a room.

Rock, fortress, deliverer: three names for God

Each word in the line does its own work. A rock is something you stand on when the ground gives way. A fortress is somewhere you can shut the gate and wait out an attack. A deliverer is a person, someone who comes and gets you out. David, who spent years on the run from Saul in the wild country of Judah before he was crowned, puts all three side by side, as if one image was not enough to say what God had been to him.

Calling God a rock was not new with David. In the song of Moses, Deuteronomy 32:4 says of God, “He is the Rock, his work is perfect.” Later, Paul reads the rock that gave Israel water in the desert as a figure of Christ: “that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). So a picture of solid stone carries a long thread through the whole Bible.

Psalm 18 is also one of the few psalms preserved twice. A nearly identical version is set in 2 Samuel 22, among the last words of David's story. The verse printed here is the opening of that long song of thanks, which is why it sounds like a man catching his breath after danger has passed.
