What is painted

The story from Luke 24

On the evening of the resurrection, two disciples leave Jerusalem for a village called Emmaus. One of them is named Cleopas. A stranger joins them on the road and asks why they are so sad. They tell him about Jesus of Nazareth, crucified, and the strange report of an empty tomb. Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, the stranger explains the scriptures concerning himself.

At the village they press him to stay: “Abide with us: for it is toward evening.” At table he takes bread, blesses it, breaks it and gives it to them, “and their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight” (Luke 24:31). They realize their hearts were burning on the road, and they go straight back to Jerusalem that same hour.

Luke places the meal indoors; the painting moves it under an olive tree, a reminder of the Mount of Olives and of the ordinary places where Christ is recognized.
