What is painted

We stand in the cool shadow of a rock-cut chamber. On the left, a stone ledge carries a length of cream linen, draped and folded, its end hanging down toward the floor. The doorway ahead is cut square in the rock, and the heavy round stone that sealed it now stands rolled aside against the opening.

Outside, the sun is coming up over soft hills. An olive tree leans across the doorway, low stone walls and cypresses fill a garden, and the light spills over the threshold onto the floor of the tomb. The colors are sand, honey and pale gold, painted in broad textured strokes. There is no text.

What the disciples found

John's Gospel gives the most detail. Mary Magdalene comes early, while it is yet dark, and sees that the stone has been taken away. She runs to Simon Peter and the other disciple, and the two of them run to the sepulchre. Peter goes in first and sees the linen clothes lie, and the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Then the other disciple goes in, and John writes simply: he saw, and believed (John 20:8). The grave clothes were not the sign of a theft; no one steals a body and leaves the wrappings neatly behind.

John also says the tomb was in a garden, near the place where Jesus was crucified, a new sepulchre wherein was never man yet laid (John 19:41). That garden is the view through the door in this painting, bright with morning.
