What is painted

We look straight down a long table covered with a white cloth edged in lace. At its far end sits Jesus in a white robe and red mantle, one hand raised as he speaks. The apostles line both sides on wooden benches and stools, turned toward him or toward one another, in robes of rust, olive, ochre and blue. One sits with his back to us at the near end.

On the table are plates, cups, a bowl of grapes and a few leaves. Around them rises a vaulted hall of stone columns hung with red banners, with potted olive trees and clay jars. Through the great central arch the eye travels out to green hills, a river and distant mountains. The watercolor breaks into speckled blue and ochre at the edges. There are no words.

“Lord, is it I?”

Matthew 26 records the moment that painters have loved to show. As they were eating, Jesus said, “Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.” They were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, “Lord, is it I?”

In the same meal he took bread, blessed it and broke it, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup and gave thanks, saying, “Drink ye all of it.” Paul, writing to the Corinthians, passes on the same words, received, he says, of the Lord: “the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread.”

The Gospels place the meal in an upper room, and artists have imagined it in many settings. Leonardo painted it on the wall of a monastery dining hall in Milan. This version chooses a hall full of light and open doors, as if the meal were meant to reach the whole world.
