The Long Table, Last Supper Christian Wall Art

What is painted

Thirteen men gather at a long table covered with a striped cream cloth and set with clay cups, jugs, bowls of olives and round loaves. Jesus sits at the center of the far side in a white robe with a rust mantle, the apostles on benches around him, some turned toward him, some toward each other. Two sit with their backs to us in the foreground.

The room has thick whitewashed walls, a woven rug on a stone floor and potted olive trees set in the window openings. Through a wide arch on the left you see cypresses and a town on the hills. The palette is warm sand, rust and slate blue, with the whole scene softened at the edges. There is no lettering on it.

The meal in the upper room

Matthew, Mark and Luke all describe the evening. Jesus sends Peter and John to prepare the Passover, and they are shown a large upper room furnished (Luke 22:12). That night, at table, he takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it and gives it to them, saying: “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”

After supper he takes the cup and calls it the new testament in his blood. The same night he tells them that one of them will betray him, and Luke adds that the disciples even argued about which of them should be accounted the greatest. Jesus answers that he is among them as he that serveth.

Paul hands on the same words in 1 Corinthians 11, and every celebration of the Eucharist, Mass, Lord's Supper or communion service goes back to this table. Holy Thursday, at the start of the Easter Triduum, remembers it each year.
