What is painted

A rounded arch of old stone fills the picture, its edges draped with trailing vine and flanked by clay jars, with worn steps leading up to it. Through it, a warm room opens out: a long table, Jesus seated at the center in a light robe, and the twelve apostles gathered along both sides, some leaning toward him, some turned to each other. A single oil lamp hangs from the beamed ceiling, and a window at the back shows the last violet light of dusk over cypress trees.

The painting has the soft, rich texture of oil on paper, all honey stone and amber light, and there are no words on this print, only the scene.

The Last Supper in the Gospels

Matthew, Mark and Luke all tell of the Passover meal Jesus ate with the twelve on the night before he died, and John describes the same evening in his own way. Mark says the disciples were shown “a large upper room furnished and prepared” (Mark 14:15). At that table Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body”, and he gave them the cup.

Luke adds the words that every celebration of Communion still repeats: “this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). It was also that night that he spoke of the one who would betray him, which is why many paintings of the scene show the disciples turning to each other with questions.

Viewing the supper from outside through an arch is a painter's choice rather than a detail from the text. It makes the room feel like a place you are being invited into, which is close to what the Eucharist means to believers.
