What is painted

A stone arch frames the scene, thick with grapevine leaves and purple clusters hanging from it, and through it a tree and a potted plant can be glimpsed. Beneath, a long wooden table is set with round loaves, cups, a clay pitcher and bowls of grapes. Jesus sits at the far end in a light robe with a red stole, breaking bread, and the twelve apostles sit on benches along both sides, some leaning in, some turned to talk.

The watercolor is soft and warm, with robes in rust, blue, green and ochre against pale stone and plenty of white paper around the edges. There are no words on the print.

Bread, wine and the true vine

All four Gospels place Jesus at supper with his disciples on the night he was betrayed, and Matthew, Mark and Luke record how he blessed the bread and the cup. Luke gives his words over the cup: “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you” (Luke 22:20). Christians of every tradition have kept that meal ever since, as the Eucharist, the Mass, the Lord's Supper or Communion.

The grapevine above the table is not a decoration only. That same night, in John's account, Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman” (John 15:1), and a few verses later, “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” At the supper he also told them he would not drink of the fruit of the vine again until the kingdom of God came (Luke 22:18).

So the painting joins the table and the vine: the wine in the cup and the living vine overhead, the meal and the life that flows from Christ into those who share it.
