What is painted

The room has plain whitewashed walls and wide openings that look out onto rolling hills, so the light pours in from outside. Around a long table shaped like a U, Jesus and the twelve apostles are gathered, breaking bread and passing cups between them. The shape of the table lets every face be seen, turned toward one another or toward Jesus at the center.

A large upper room, furnished and prepared

The Gospels give the setting in some detail. When the disciples asked where they should prepare the Passover, Jesus sent two of them into the city, telling them to follow a man carrying a pitcher of water. The owner of the house would show them “a large upper room furnished and prepared” (Mark 14:15). Luke names the two disciples as Peter and John.

There, on the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying “This is my body”; then he took the cup. Luke adds the words “this do in remembrance of me”. Every celebration of the Eucharist, Mass or Lord's Supper looks back to this room.

Painters have often put the apostles along one side of a straight table. Here the table curves around, which is closer to the way guests shared a festive meal in that world, reclining or sitting in a ring with the host in the middle.
