The command to enter
Chapter 6 ended with Noah doing everything God commanded him in building the ark. Chapter 7 opens with a new instruction: come thou and all thy house into the ark, for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. God gives seven days' warning before the rain, which will fall for forty days and forty nights.
A detail surprises many readers. Verse 2 asks Noah to take clean animals by sevens and unclean ones by two, while the familiar picture of pairs comes from other verses in the story. Both are part of the text, and the clean animals matter later, when Noah offers sacrifice after the flood in chapter 8.
What does Genesis 7:9 mean?
Verse 9 is the line on our print: “There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark.” The verse goes on, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah. The animals are not rounded up. They come to Noah, which the story presents as God's own doing, and each pair is a promise that life will continue on the other side of the water.
Noah is six hundred years old, the text says, when the fountains of the great deep are broken up and the windows of heaven are opened. Verse 16 adds a tender touch that is easy to pass over: the LORD shut him in. The door of the ark is closed by God himself, a picture of protection rather than of Noah's own effort.

Jesus refers to this chapter in Matthew 24, comparing the days before his return to the days of Noah, when people went on eating, drinking and marrying until the flood came. The first letter of Peter recalls that eight souls were saved by water, and Hebrews 11 lists Noah among the heroes of faith, who, warned of things not yet seen, prepared an ark to save his house.
