What is painted

The story behind “two and two”

The flood story fills chapters 6 to 9 of Genesis. God sees the violence that has filled the earth and tells Noah, a righteous man, to build an ark of gopher wood and bring his family inside with the animals. Genesis 7:6 says Noah was six hundred years old when the waters came.

Verse 9 finishes with the words “the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.” Readers sometimes miss that the same chapter asks for clean animals by sevens (Genesis 7:2), so the pairs are only part of the picture. Then, in verse 16, comes a small and tender detail: “the LORD shut him in.” Noah does not close the door himself.

The story ends with a dove returning with an olive leaf and a rainbow set in the cloud as a sign of God's covenant never again to destroy the earth by a flood (Genesis 9:13). For children it is a story about animals; for adults it is about a God who keeps what he promises.
