About this print
Baptism Shell
A shell tipped over a font, a thin thread of water falling from its lip, and a small branch of olive laid beside the stone.
What is painted
A scallop shell hangs above a baptismal font carved from pale stone, tilted so that a fine stream of water runs from its edge into the basin below. Next to the font lies a sprig of olive with a few narrow leaves. The background is a warm neutral, and touches of gold catch the ridges of the shell and the rim of the stone.
It is painted as a simple, calm still life with nothing extra in the frame. There is no text, which makes it easy to give for a baptism in any church tradition.
Why a shell, and why olive
In many churches the priest or minister pours the water of baptism from a shell, and the scallop has become the most common sign of the sacrament. It is also the old badge of pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, so the shell carries a second meaning: a life that is now a journey toward God.
The olive sprig recalls the flood. In Genesis 8:11 the dove returns to Noah's ark with an olive leaf in its mouth, the sign that the waters had gone down and a new world could begin. The First Epistle of Peter makes the connection with baptism explicitly, speaking of the few who were saved by water in Noah's day and adding that baptism now saves us (1 Peter 3:20-21).
