What is painted

The well is round and built of stacked gray stones, with a tall clay jug standing beside it. Jesus sits on its rim in a white robe, a blue mantle and a red stole over his shoulder. A small boy in an ochre tunic stands in front of him, barefoot in sandals, hands folded, face turned up. Jesus looks down at him and rests his hand lightly on the boy's curls.

There is no background, only pale paper and a few tufts of grass at the base of the well. The watercolor is loose and luminous, with soft edges. There is no text on the print.

Two Gospel images in one

The painting is not an illustration of one particular verse. It brings together two things the Gospels tell us about Jesus. The first is his welcome of children: when the disciples tried to turn away those who brought little ones to him, he “took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them” (Mark 10:16). The hand on the child's head is that blessing.

The second is the well. In John 4, Jesus, wearied with his journey, sits by Jacob's well in Samaria and speaks with a woman who has come to draw water. He tells her of a water that will be “a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). Wells in Scripture are places of meeting, and this one becomes the meeting place of the smallest person in the village with the Lord.

For a baptism the pairing is fitting: water, and a blessing given by the hand of Christ.
