What is painted

Paul's armor list

Near the end of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul turns from family life to a larger struggle. The rest of verse 11 gives the reason: “that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Verse 12 explains that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers.

He then names each piece: the loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith that quenches all the fiery darts of the wicked, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. That last phrase is why the sword and the open Bible lie together in the painting.

Paul writes this as a prisoner; a few verses later he calls himself an ambassador in bonds, and he asks the Ephesians to pray that he may open his mouth boldly. The armor he describes is not for attacking people. It is for standing firm, and verse 13 repeats the word: having done all, to stand.
