What is painted

The image is made in the style of a linocut: strong black shapes, carved-looking lines, and a single warm color, ochre yellow, for the sun rising behind. The last pieces of the armor of God

Paul closes his letter to the Ephesians by urging believers to put on the whole armor of God, so that they can stand firm. He then lists the pieces one after another: the loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith. Verse 17 completes the list with the helmet and the sword.

The helmet protects the head, and Paul ties it to salvation, an image he also uses in 1 Thessalonians 5:8, where the helmet is “the hope of salvation”. The idea is older still: Isaiah 59:17 pictures God himself putting on “an helmet of salvation upon his head”.

The sword is the only piece in the list that can strike rather than defend, and Paul says plainly what it is: the word of God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he answered each temptation with a line of Scripture that begins “It is written”. Paul, who describes himself a few verses later as an “ambassador in bonds”, wrote these military images while he was a prisoner, likely with soldiers close at hand.
